​Using a rating agent or surveyor

You do not need a rating agent or surveyor to get any type of Business Rates relief or discount.

You do not have to be represented in talks about your rateable value or your rates bill.

You do not have to pay a pay for a rating agent or surveyor to help you.

If you do wish to be represented see the following institutes;

• Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors[external link]

• Institute of Revenues, Rating and Valuation[external link]

Members will be qualified and regulated by rules of professional conduct. The rules are to to protect the public from misconduct.

Check before you employ or sign any documents with a rating adviser that;

• they have the correct knowledge and expertise

• they have indemnity insurance

Take great care and, if needed, seek further advice before entering into any contract.
